If I tell you … I will have to kill you …

If I tell you … I will have to kill you …

I came across this the other day.

SEOguru:

Alot of what I do is pretty proprietary.  I can’t really divulge my methods – look at it as a “trade secret”

Ok.

Really?

Are we being followed?

The SEO Holy Grail

The fact is that SEO is pretty straightforward to understand and to grasp – it’s the guru crowd who wants to make it inaccessible – as if they are protecting some ancient manuscript that has been handed down from generation-to-generation – Holy Grail.

So in the “research” for this post, I decided to search Sage Google for when the first time SEO was used in popular culture:

https://www.google.co.za/?gws_rd=ssl#q=when+was+seo+first+mentioned

Google’s alter ego  asked if that is what I really wanted?  Didn’t I rather want to search for: when was jesus first mentioned ?  (Maybe there is something about the Grail & SEO).

SEO Holy Grail - Did you mean Jesus?

In essence – SEO has gone hand-in-hand with the advent of the Search Engine and the term has been attributed to (to quote Wiki who in turn quotes Danny Sulivan:

According to industry analyst Danny Sullivan, the phrase “search engine optimization” probably came into use in 1997. Sullivan credits Bruce Clay as being one of the first people to popularize the term.[5]

SO SEO is relatively new, but really old in internet terms.  But web developers began to optimise their websites back then to get higher rankings in the raft of search engines that existed in the early days (anyone remember Alta Vista?)

The big change came about when Google decided that they were after quality search results and started to build upon their Page Ranking algorithm.  This meant that the first generation of SEO needed to do some real work – but the principles have remained the same: create a well structured, content dynamic site and the search engines will like you.  Why?  Because they make their money from people clicking on their ads which deliver the best possible results for what is being searched for.

The SEO Holy Grail – is more common sense than mystery.
